A Colorful Tribute: Frankie Knuckles Honored with a Mural in Chicago

Mural of Frankie Knuckles at the Chicago Public Library celebrating house music

Hot off the press, Chicago! The city just unveiled a fresh mural honoring house music legend Frankie Knuckles. Located at the Uptown Branch of the Chicago Public Library, artist Max Sansing aptly named his masterpiece "Under One Roof", a tribute to Knuckles and the legacy of Gherkin Records, the house music hub of yore.

A Journey to House Origins

This colorful event ran from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., featuring Chicago Public Library Commissioner Chris Brown, Frederick Dunson of the Frankie Knuckles Foundation, and the ever-so-talented DJ Purple, who made sure no foot was left un-tapped to his beat. Somewhere, a turntable shed a happy tear!

“Music is the answer, but what was the question?”

A Gherkin Gala!

Guests enjoyed activities for kids, arts and crafts galore, and a celebratory vibe complete with cakes galore! Yes, you read that right... cakes to toast the king of house music!

  • Highlight 1: Right across from the former site of Gherkin Records at 916 W. Buena Avenue, because even walls have stories to tell.
  • Highlight 2: The initiative was funded by the City of Chicago’s Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE) and managed by the Chicago Public Art Group. Heroes who, spoiler alert, don’t wear capes.
  • Punchline: With such a tribute, it’s clear house music is here to stay – lighting up the city like a laser on a dance floor!
